Job Opportunity
Operations Assistant
Full time – 35 hours per week
St. John’s Farmers’ Market Cooperative, St. John’s, NL

The St. John’s Farmers’ Market is looking for an Operations Assistant to help with the setup, supervision, and tear down of events and rentals at the SJFM.  The Operations Assistant will be a core part of the SJFM team working to make the Market a great place for everyone.

What the job will look like:

  • The main part of this position will be to act as the on-site leader and supervisor for rentals at the SJFM.  This means that your schedule will change somewhat from week to week based on when rentals happen here at the Market.  This could mean working days, evenings, or weekends depending on what events are scheduled to be here.
  • You will be the one taking the lead in setting up for events, tearing down after events, and helping with clean-up.  This is a physical job that will mean you will be moving tables and chairs, lifting equipment, and helping to clean the building.
  • You will work closely with our renters and community agencies and be the go-to person during events and rentals.
  • You will also be responsible for scheduling and training volunteers for markets and events as well as managing performers, buskers, and market day add-on activities.
  • At the SJFM, we work as a team.  While we each have our own roles to fill, we regularly collaborate with each other on the operations of the SJFM organization.
  • There may also be other tasks that come up from time to time that you may be asked to help out with.

To be a good fit for this role, you should:

  • Be very comfortable with physical work such as moving/lifting tables, chairs, and equipment
  • Be self-motivated and be able to manage your own time
  • Be a people person who is outgoing and friendly
  • Have some experience supervising other people and be able to provide direction and leadership to support staff and volunteers
  • Be computer-literate and comfortable using Excel, Google Docs, Word and Email
  • Be comfortable working in a fast-paced, crowed, and noisy environment
  • Be able to be flexible.  This role will require some evening and weekend work and the schedule may change from time to time.
  • Experience managing or organizing events would be a definite bonus but is not required.

About the Position:

  • Wages will be $19.50 per hour for a 35 hour work-week
  • This position is contractual until the end of 2024 with the likelihood of extension.
  • Schedule for the week will vary based on the events planned.  Schedule will be reviewed between the successful candidate and the SJFM. While there is some flexibility, it is expected that hours will include both weekdays, some weekends, and some evenings.
  • This will be an on-site position, based out of the SJFM at 245 Freshwater Rd., St. John’s.
  • The SJFM has a “bring-your-own-tech” policy. Staff will be required to bring and use their own equipment (laptop/phone/etc). We will provide a monthly stipend of $60 to compensate for this.
